A day after Chief Justice DY Chandrachud stated that he had prayed to God for a solution to the Ayodhya dispute, Congress leader Udit Raj remarked on Monday that had the Chief Justice prayed for other issues as well, those matters could have also been resolved, bringing justice to common people.
Raj, former MP and national chairman of Unorganised Workers and Employees Congress, tweeted, “Chief Justice Chandrachud ji said that he had prayed to God for the solution of the Ayodhya issue. If he had prayed for some other issues, they would have also been resolved like a common man could get justice from the High Court and Supreme Court without money”.
In that case, the Congress leader said, “Misuse of ED, CBI and IT would have stopped”.
Speaking at an event in Pune on Sunday, Justice Chandrachud mentioned that he had prayed for a solution to the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute before pronouncing the verdict. He was part of the five-judge Supreme Court bench led by then Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, which delivered the verdict on November 9, 2019, bringing an end to the nearly 70-year-old legal battle.
The Chief Justice said, “I sat before the deity and told Him that He needs to find a solution. … Believe me, if you have faith, God will always find a way”. Justice Chandrachud also noted that the Supreme Court judges “very often” have cases to adjudicate but don’t arrive at a solution, and something similar happened during the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute, for which he eventually turned to God for a solution.
The Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute centred on whether the 16th-century Mughal mosque was built after demolishing a temple at the site, which is claimed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram. The Supreme Court allowed the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya while designating an alternative five-acre plot for the mosque.
